If your building is over 10,000 square feet, both the CalGreen Code and the California Energy Code (commonly referred to as Title 24) require the project to be commissioned.
The most important point to note is that the commissioning required by these codes is not as extensive as some industry commissioning standards. We often see commissioning agents applying higher standards than is actually required by the California Building Code. While this may be beneficial on some projects, it also translates into higher costs for the owner.

Dealing with your building department is, perhaps, the most stressful part of your construction project. Whether you are an architect, designer, developer, or homeowner, figuring out how the CalGreen Code requirements fit into your project can be challenging. In some cases, you may not have access to the full text of the code. In other cases, the code requirements may not be clear due to poor wording or the lack of specific guidance.
Lastly, those in the industry quickly learn that building departments throughout the state interpret and enforce the code differently. What may be acceptable in the City of Los Angeles may not be ok in Santa Rosa. In fact, many jurisdictions publish their own CalGreen Checklist, which you must follow.
